Build Day 7-9: Last dance with the timbers

DSC_0299

In just two quick weeks, all timbers and exterior walls have been installed. We can now walk through every room of the house!

The last sections of the house to be established were the kitchen and pantry/laundry/mudroom area. The picture above shows one of the last timbers being placed – this is one of three that lie horizontally as part of our mudroom ceiling.

There’s so much to admire and be grateful for within these walls. It’s quite surreal that we will one day live among these timbers and pegs and big windows, and in this setting.

Speaking of big, beautiful views, I was beyond thrilled to discover my favourite tree on the entire property is framed perfectly by the kitchen window – we couldn’t have planned it to work out that way.

I’ll be gazing at that giant, swooping white pine every time I do dishes.

This is the house with all of its interior timbers and exterior walls.

All that remains before Patrick heads out is the roof. You can tell by the job list below that a lot needs to be done to ready the building for those panels. Regardless, it’s pretty incredible we’re at Week 3 of 3 of this stage of our build.

This puts any to do list I’ve ever made to shame.

Weekend work

A roof would have been nice the past couple of days to keep the April (?!) snow out of the house, but there’s a part of me that will be sad to see it go on this week.

Soon we will only see the timbers from indoors, and our endless views of the eagles keeping watch from above just won’t be the same.

A silly thing to say, I know.

Really, nothing will be better than moving into this place, so bring on the roof. (And the shingles, windows, electrical, plumbing, interior walls, drywall, kitchen, flooring, and all the other things that aren’t even on the list yet).

As well as shovelling out the house, the weekend work agenda included some wiring. John and Patrick tackled that before it becomes much more challenging due to the roof panels.

As promised, I got some better photos of the great room from the loft, and also a shot of the view from the main door. Click on the photos to enlarge.

  1. John and Kelly,

I agree about the views! The photos, I am sure, do not convey the full and absolute beauty of your site. I love how the house already looks like it has sat on this site for many years with the trees and nature growing around it. You guys are amazing! Keep up the great work as you will appreciate all the effort you put into your home, especially the first time you sip your morning coffee on that porch.

    1. Thanks for checking out the blog, Adam! That porch might very well be the part of the house John is most excited about. I’ll be thrilled to finally see him relaxing… We couldn’t be happier with how things are turning out. It helps to have Timberbuilt’s excellent design behind it all.

  2. Hello Kelly,
I know we have never met but we too are planning to build a Timberbuilt Home. Can’t tell you how much fun it is to watch yours going up and to hear how your team is doing. I’ts the second best thing to getting to watch our own home go up. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this adventure with the rest of us.

    1. Thank you for posting, Kathie! I’m so happy to know you’re enjoying our adventure and that you, too, will get to experience the thrill of watching your own Timberbuilt home appear before your eyes. We’re having so much fun – John with building and me watching and writing. Have you settled on your design? I hope you will have your own gorgeous views to relish!

  3. Hi Kelly, yes we have settled on a design. It is a customized by Adam (Scott), side entry, Spanish Olive. Ours will not have the walk out basement like yours. It will be outside of Flagstaff AZ in a high alritude mountain meadow full of aspens. It should have a georgeous view too, but yours is simply stunning. I see where Patrick is heading out, Timberbuilts portion complete. We hope you will continue to post go this Blog. What’s next? Windows & Doors? Roof & Siding? Your home is just beautiful and it sure is fun watching it come together. Thanks again, Kathie

    1. Hi Kathie,
We visited a side-entry Olive and it was gorgeous with a really nice flow to the layout. The setting for yours sounds so scenic and peaceful – like something from a movie. Yes, I’ll continue blogging. I’m having a lot of fun with it, and it’s proving to be a nice way for us to keep a record of the progress too. Next up: peaked roof above the flat-ceilinged mudroom, cold roof, shingles, then windows (and probably other things too – there’s so much). I expect each step will feel much slower now after the three-week whirlwind we just experienced. It was a great time!
      Thanks again for reading,
      Kelly
