Build Week 4: Spot the difference

Visits to our house lately are like those observation games from kids’ activity books – the ones that challenge you to notice the differences between two pictures that at first glance look quite similar.

As expected, the changes each day are now subtler than they were during the three-week building blitz, when timbers and panels were going up as if the world was on fast-forward.

But each bit of progress is exciting just the same.

Week 4 brought the installation of more exterior timbers, and of course, they are gorgeous. The peak of the great room is now quite provocative. You can almost hear it whisper, “I am a strong, beautiful house. Knock on my door and maybe I’ll let you inside where you’ll find I’m not just a pretty face…”.

I happened to arrive just as Kevin, Alfie, and Larry were installing the last of the timbers for the peak of the great room. Even John, who was busy on another task at the other side of the house, didn’t know how quickly those guys were working. But he got in on the action when it came time to secure that section.

There were some memorable negotiations last summer between John and me, and also Timberbuilt’s Adam S., when it came to those exterior timbers.

Adam suggested straight braces for the truss, which are a design update from the more traditional curved version. John liked them too. I… did not.

After some discussion and a trade that gave John his choice of flooring (that is, until we ended up choosing something else anyway), I won the curved braces. But really, John and I both won.

When I asked him whether he was happy with our choice after seeing the peak, he said he wouldn’t change anything about our timbers. Neither would I.

The braces are the timbers supporting the truss. Above the truss are six purlins. The braces’ fetching curves aren’t as apparent in this photo as they could be, but you can get the idea by looking at the braces in the peak of the loft (see photos below).

Can you spot the differences in these photos?

Disclosure: With so much to look at, I missed some of the new timber accents until Kevin pointed them out. Shameful.

    1. Yay, Team Curved Braces! If he could, John would work with those guys every day, even when our build is complete. He is absolutely a full-fledged member of the crew on this Olive. Thanks for checking up on us!

    1. Thank you, Ahnika. I know you have an appreciation for timber frame homes.
I’ve changed the address to perfectandthegood.com, so that might be easier to remember (the old address still works too).
