Build Day 2: Our views take shape

So far, so great!

In a mere two days of work by John, Patrick, and a crew of three hardworking guys from Don Hager Contracting (Kevin, Larry, and Alfie), walls are popping up and our house is appearing before our eyes. Patrick says things are moving along faster than he expected.

This is what our place looked like by the end of Day 1 (Monday). Knowing how things finished up today, it doesn’t look like much. But until yesterday, I had no idea how exciting some upright, foam-stuffed OSB could be. The window is in our laundry space.

By the end of today, we were able to see what our views will look like from the dining room and our bedroom. All I can say is it’s a good thing our ensuite window has a lot of trees in front of it…

This is our bedroom. The section on the far left is the washroom, and yes, the toilet will sit right beside that window. John assures me we’re too high up to worry about privacy. I can’t say I’m completely convinced.

With a view like this, perhaps we’ll start eating at the dining room table like civilized people.

The last wall to go up today was a side of the great room. I was happy to get away from school in time to witness the process, which, based on my observations, went something like this: put puzzle pieces together, attach plates so the section can be lifted with the help of the telehandler/fancy forklift and guided into place, secure it with long screws, stand back and admire work.

It feels great to hear that with every wall inspection so far, Patrick discovers a tight, accurate fit.

These are exciting, exhausting times. Here’s to another great day tomorrow.

Patrick’s breakage tally:

  • 2 broom handles
  • 1 skill saw cord
  • 1 key to the telehandler
  • 1 ancient sawhorse (to his credit, he had already made 2 stellar ones from scratch in 15 minutes flat, and fixed some others)

  1. Thank you Kelly for the morning read.
I can’t say I envy the white background (snow and ice), but who doesn’t dream of a water front home, see you in July!
Hi to Jonh and a “keep up the good work” to your crew.
Looking forward to more news from the north. GK

    1. It’s great to hear from you George! We can’t wait for you to visit! The snow and ice make the summers so much sweeter, not to mention the snowshoeing better.
